Scope:

Upgrade and replace approximately 1665m of leaking galvanised iron rider mains across six streets in Lower Hutt and one in Wellington. Replace 93 customer connections.

For this project, we co-designed alignment with the customer to create efficiency through pre-construction and completed 95% of the work using trenchless techniques - resulting in less disruption for residents and carbon savings for the project.

The work wasn't without challenges that our team efficiently addressed. This included finding existing isolation valves that are non-operational and having to change plans, We were also working with inaccurate records of the existing network and around failing live pipe systems prone to burst. An additional factor was that the timing of this work coincided with a Wellington winter, which meant that at times were working in adverse weather conditions.

Launch hole for new ridermain. Note the contrast between the existing shallow leaking GI ridermain

Despite this we finished this project finished on programme and within the budget delivering a new and compliant asset, achieving a significant mitigation of district water loss.
